Graduates 2022: Lily Jane Wood: Fashion Design with Business Studies

“I chose Fashion Design with Business Studies here at Brighton purely because the graduate collections looked to me intimidatingly strong, and the statistics of Fashion Design graduates going straight into the industry after graduation.”

Hi Lily. Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences

“My final collection this year is focused on artists’ clothing, in particular; Joseph Boyce, Jackson Pollock, Lee Kang-Hyo and Francis Bacon. Looking at ‘the wear of work’, how continuous repeated wear of working clothes can be reflected through the fit, silhouette and texture of garments.

I was also particularly attracted to the style of these different artists, their lack of specialised uniform, wearing everyday clothes to create art. A felt suit, corduroy slacks, polo neck, denim jacket.”

How have you found your course and time at Brighton?

“The course over the past 3 years has been very intense, especially this final year, however, I have often found myself saying, very honestly, that I’m living the dream whenever people ask me “how’s uni going?”. Every project and deadline, despite all the stress and sheer amount of labour that is required of Fashion students, it’s only made me see how much this is what I want to do, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”

How did you choose your course – why did you choose to study Fashion Design?

“I chose Fashion Design with Business Studies here at Brighton purely because the graduate collections looked to me intimidatingly strong, and the statistics of Fashion Design graduates going straight into the industry after graduation.”

What are your plans after graduation?

“My plan post-graduation is to get accepted onto a Fashion Design MA course, so I can continue pursuing my direction in Menswear. I feel that this year I have found my stride in terms of my design identity and I’m excited to keep pushing it further.”
