Second Brighton graduate wins BP Portrait Award

Painting graduate Charlie Schaffer was last night announced as the winner of 2019 BP Portrait Award.

Charlie’s win comes a year after 3D Design and Craft graduate Miriam Escofet won the 2018 award.

Charlie, who graduated from the University in 2014, won for his painting “Imara in her Fur Coat“ inspired by Titian’s Portrait of Girolamo Fracastoro. The painting was picked from 2,538 entries.

An exhibition to accompany the award will run at the National Portrait Gallery from 13 June to 20 October 2019.

Earlier this year Charlie won the Brian Botting Prize for the third time.
