Graduates 2022: Cameron Bridgeman: Fine Art MA

“I was attracted to the MA course in Brighton for two main reasons. Firstly, it has a strong reputation. And secondly, a number of friends have attended this university so I was very familiar with the campus and course.”

Please tell us a bit about your work and your influences

“I have an obsession with materials that have exceeded their life and purpose. I work intuitively with these objects, taking them apart and reformatting them, experimenting with the different forms and textures that the natural object possesses.
This process has come from a childhood fascination of taking things apart to find out how they work. I am attracted to the patterns, the rhythms, and the sequences that the objects reveal. My interest stems from not knowing about the object’s past life and the potential narratives hidden in the marks, textures, and forms.

“I investigate the way the material is presented to bring out hidden narratives in the work. Throughout this course I have been developing the idea of the mythic and the post-industrial working in symbiosis. I have been heavily influenced by the works of Damien Ortega and Cornelia Parker, particularly their use of materials and scale. Both these artists have been able to use their materials to create an atmosphere in the space.”

How have you found your course and time at Brighton?

“I was attracted to the MA course in Brighton for two main reasons. Firstly, it has a strong reputation. And secondly, a number of friends have attended this university so I was very familiar with the campus and course.
I am on the full time one year MA Fine art course and though it has been a lot of work, it has been incredibly rewarding. My studio was spacious allowing me to be very productive. It has also allowed me to experiment with different mediums, enabling me to step out of my comfort zone.”

How did you choose your course – why did you choose to study Fine Art?

“I chose to study fine art because it allows me to experiment with a variety of materials. I am drawn to working very sculpturally however using a lot of other materials as a process to explore ideas. I am drawn to working very sculpturally however this fine art course allows me the opportunity to experiment with a variety of media including painting, printmaking, drawing and film. Students on this course are able to develop a range of practical and creative skills, including the ability to develop individual ideas. We are also encouraged to collaborate with others in projects or in group exhibitions.”

What are your plans after graduation?

“After this course I will be traveling back to the Cayman Islands to work at Artisan Metal works. This is a metal works company based in the Cayman Islands that specializes in custom metal works e.g., gates, railings, and fencing.
Over the pandemic I worked at Artisan Metalworks part-time. I also rented a small studio at the site so that I could continue working in my free time. Towards the end of the year the owner of the company approached me to ask if I would be willing to help develop one of the unused spaces to convert to a gallery.”
