4th April

This week saw a special event after the mornings work, an assessment of last weekends strong winds and some more beautiful flowers emerging. The wind had blown down some large trees around the village but our wood managed to escape any serious damage. A large oak branch fell on the east path going towards the quarry and a couple of smaller branches straddled paths. They were all cleared away with hand saws and elbow grease. Marsh marigolds have made an appearance whilst the bluebells are slowly laying down their carpet. Bill had a birthday which the group celebrated in traditional style by finishing slightly early and sitting around by the large oak called Trafalgar. The sun shined all morning and the rain drops fell at 12.00 noon – we all left very happy!

Neil is without doubt the groups hero when it comes to moving wood chips. He is often rewarded for his energetic enthusiasm with an extra slice of cake at party time.

It must be said that Neil is closely followed by Stephen as the volunteer wood chip hero.

This week followed on from where we left off before our Easter break.

Marsh Marigold or King cups, a small clump of three plants grow very happily on a bank close to a river. Apparently there used to be an abundance of them in this site but climate conditions have taken their toll

Bill celebrates his birthday after the mornings session by handing round delicious chocolate cake, excellent whiskey, red wine and ginger beer. Some people think this is the best thing about volunteering in the woods!
