Student Advice Service – Money Matters

News from the Student Advice Service at the University of Brighton

How safe is your information?

If you access the internet on the move via wifi, connect with people via social media, use internet banking, buy anything on Amazon, sell on Ebay especially using a mobile device…..and so much more, you could do a lot worse than invest a few minutes of your time to make sure you are carrying out your transactions and activities safely.

The Take5 campaign highlights some of the most common pitfalls and offers suggestions and tips on how to avoid being scammed. In just 5 minutes you can take a short questionnaire to see how vulnerable you are. You can also have a look at: http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/ to see what advice the Police offer.

Most of us could probably identify a dodgy email address, know not to share our PIN with friends and are aware of the dangers of staying logged on to Facebook etc but there are more subtle ways of scamming someone.

Students are particularly vulnerable as scammers know how loans are paid and what the portals look like. They also know that students have to add bank details to their student finance record online and this presents a golden opportunity to intercept bank details and cash in. Don’t be the next victim.

Bank safe, save safe, spend safe
