Southern-Railway-LogoStephen-Lloyd-MP-Paul-WybornWith effect from today, 22nd August 2016, significant changes are being implemented to the purchse of Unizone tickets.

Customers will need to use their current valid student id card or NUS card PLUS A 16-25 RAILCARD in order to purchase a weekly, monthly or termly ticket.

These changes have not been widely publicised and have been introduced with very little notice.

For students under the age of 25, you can apply online or at a station. You will need a valid UK driving license or international passport as proof of age.

For students over the age of 25, you can apply online or at a station. You will additionally need to complete the mature student section of the form, which needs to be stamped and signed by a member of University staff.  You can find a link to it here

Southern Rail staff at Eastbourne station are telling people that this change was made because the University specifically requested it. Please can you confirm if there is any truth in this?

      Hi

Truthfully I don’t know, but I would think this unlikely as the change has caused/is causing/will continue to cause a lot more work for university staff at an already extremely busy time. I wrote this blog as direct response to information I received from Southern staff and from the discussion board between university staff which ensued I have not heard that this was a request from Brighton. Also, this ticket isn’t unique to Brighton students but also includes Sussex University and colleges in Sussex. You could ask Southern where the decision came from, or seek representation from the Students’ Union who collaboratively across all institutionns may have a stronger voice?

I’d be really happy to share any further information

      Best wishes
      Helen

I seem to remember that the Unizone was to be extended to Hastings in September this year but can’t find anything on the Southern rail site and the staff have not been informed. Do you know if this is ever going to be implemented?

      Hi
The negotiations about the extension to Hastings I believe were between the Students’ Union and Southern Rail. I know that the campaign was initiated by the Students’Union. The best person you can contact about this is Cat Bach c.bach@brighton.ac.uk who is the new Campus Development Sabbatical Officer. I know that she will be happy to hear from you with any comments and suggestions
