Royal National Institute of Navigation Conference 2017
The South Coast Conferences event support team were
on hand at this year’s ‘Royal National Institute of Navigation
Conference 2017’ which was held at the Brighton Hilton
On site at the event, Southcoast Event Support team ran a
full day registration desk acting both as a distribution point
for name badges, information help desk and port of call for
delegates and arriving speakers. Name badges and lanyards
were supplied by the team along with the distribution of RIN
delegate and speaker packs. The desk was set up and running
for each full day of the event being manned at all times.
Southcoast Events Support also assisted with the operational
running and greetings one evening at the drinks reception
being held at the Royal Pavilion in Brighton centre. A member
of the team was present to welcome guests and work
alongside the Royal Pavilion hospitality team to relieve any
stress on the organiser, allowing them to enjoy the networking

her during the whole duration of the conference and this is

I have recently had the pleasure of organising the International
Navigation Conference 2017 in Brighton for the Royal Institute
This was a five day event that required a professional
registration team, luckily for me Laura and Richard took
charge of the front desk. Badging the delegates, dealing
with all manner of questions regarding both the exhibition
and conference. But their input didn’t stop there – they were
available for the drinks reception at the Pavilion and helped the
speakers with their presentations – no question fazed them.
I have been working in this industry for over 30 years and I
can honestly say they are the best reception team I have ever
worked with – friendly, cheery, professional everything you need
and want. If you want your event in “safe hands” you cannot go
wrong with the Southcoast Events team!

Southcoast Event Support had a full team on hand for the
full four days of the event from beginning to end, set up to
breakdown. We would like to thank Louisa Chanter for the
opportunity to help with this fantastic conference and hope to
work alongside each other in the future. We would also like to
thank the hospitality and technician staff at the Brighton Hilton
Metropole who we worked with to ensure the smooth running
of the event.

The Santander University of Brighton Ideas Competition was open to students and graduates of the university where they could present their ideas for a new product, service or community project and be in with a chance to win a cash prize. The competition culminated in an exciting evening which welcomed the five finalists of the competition to pitch their business ideas to a panel of judges including of our very own Vice Chancellor, Debra Humphris.

After the finalists seamlessly delivered their pitches to an audience of senior University staff, local entrepreneurs and specialists businesses, the judges retreated to discuss who would be crowned the winner of the top cash prize. Whilst the guests were enjoying the delicious canapés served by Richard and his fantastic hospitality team, there was a photo opportunity and a chance to enjoy the tinkering of the pianist, Mark Davies.

The prize giving was complete with rounds of applause and giant oversized cheques as product design students from The Process collected the top prize for their product “enAball” which is a product designed for wheelchair users to be able to express themselves through art.
The Southcoast Events team were delighted to have worked on such a prestigious event with Clare and Luke from the Entrepreneurship team taking some of the administrative tasks away to allow them to focus on supporting the finalists with their pitches and ideas. After scoping meetings with the organisers, we liaised with the hospitality team to put together a bespoke menu for the guests to enjoy as well as working with the caretakers onsite to ensure the hall was set up just right. We also hired some LED up-lighters from a local audio visible company to take the space from just a hall used for exams, to an awards venue fit for the most important of VIPs.

All in all, the evening was a huge success and we were proud to have been able to support such an event. We are already looking forward to hearing next year’s ideas!

We’ve been busy working on the Interprofessionary Education Conference at Moulsecoomb and we’ve seen just about everything from getting caught in hailstorms, assisting a community support officer with some dodgy parking to hunting down a makeshift dog bowl for a four legged workshop presenter. Need some further explanation? I don’t blame you.
The IPE Conference is a annual conference which brings together students across all courses from the School of Health Sciences to promote collaborative approaches to health and social care. The conference runs at both Eastbourne and Moulsecoomb campuses and consists of a series of workshops where students can meet expert practioners, service users and patients themselves.
The Southcoast team welcomed over 500 students over the two iterations of the conference which was made much easier by the introduction of using QR codes for checking in the students – all they needed to do is flash their smartphones with the QR codes for the Southcoast team to scan with their iPads and voila, they are done! Gone are the days of manually registering delegates.
Weather’s looking clear over Huxley building
Setting up our registration and help desk in the impressive Huxley building, the team were ready to welcome the students and presenters alike. The workshops themselves were spread across them campus in Huxley, Cockcroft and Watts buildings so it was vital to make sure the signage was clear to avoid losing anyone. Setting up a help desk in such a prominent location means that the team need to be on hand to assist with not just conference specific queries but also general University enquiries – which was never more true than today when a Police Community Support officer popped by to see if we could help with locating the owner of a car which was blocking a pathway at nearby Moulsecoomb station. Luckily it wasn’t one of our delegates but we did help direct him to someone who could help find the driver before the car needed to be towed away.
Working on events for the University, we are fortunate to meet a wide range of people and today, we were lucky enough to meet the four legged kind. One of the patient perspective workshops offered students the opportunity to meet a patient who is living with type 1 diabetes and her dog, Treacle who is specially trained to help her manage her glucose levels. Needless to say, both Treacle and her owner were a hit with the students… and the Southcoast team of course.

The day drew to a close after a helping of afternoon tea and cakes in Huxley foyer and the students made their way home after receiving their certificate of attendance from the Southcoast team. It was a privilege for us to be involved in an event like this which gives students the tools to employ a collaborative approach to health and social care when moving forward with their chosen professions.
The Easter season has been upon us and rather than filling up on chocolate eggs, the Southcoast Events team have been busy working on conferences and events all over the University campuses.
We were fortunate enough to support the student focused Interprofessional Education Conference in Eastbourne on the 29th March which brought together students from across the whole of the School of Health Sciences to encourage a collaborative approach to treating mental and health related conditions. The day consisted of workshops for the students to attend; patient perspective workshops brought in presenters who were living with conditions for the students to talk to and some were more practical like the hugely popular Wheelchair Dancers where students (and some Southcoast staff!) got to try dancing in wheelchairs.

After that, we were back in sunny Eastbourne for the 18th Annual Mental Health Conference where we welcomed members of the public to the University for a day of discussion regarding mental health and the theme of compassion.
Then it was on to Edward Street, Grand Parade campus for the 11th International Sympoiusm on Iconicity in Language and Literature where academics from all over the world came together for a three day symposium. The symposium consisted of three parallel sessions where academics presented their papers on Iconicity – the Southcoast team put on their AV technician hats to operate and set up the speakers with the presentation facilities – which we couldn’t have done without the help of the Grand Parade Media Centre!
After all of these events, the team were very much looking forward to the bank holidays weekend to rest and prepare for the upcoming events! Watch this space for some of the case studies for each of these conferences with more pictures and insight into our event days.
