As well as having one our favourite first names for a psychologist, Melvin J. Lerner is a social psychologist who also trained in clinical psychology. Early in his career he witnessed health care practitioners routinely blame & derogate people diagnosed with mental health issues for their problems. This troubled him, as he often knew the practitioners personally as compassionate individuals. Subsequently influenced (!) by Milgram’s work, he formulated the Belief in a Just World hypothesis – when people blame and denigrate others who receive unfair treatment, to defend their view of the social world. He is a pioneer in the social psychological study of justice. Today his work has strong applied value in a number of fields, including victim blaming & rape myth acceptance.
