BUDS 2015

BUDS is the Brighton Undergraduate Dissertation Showcase, an annual conference open to all Level 5 and 6 students in SASS. Final year students get to experience presenting their findings to a large audience and fielding questions, other level 6 students get to experience an academic conference first hand and ask questions, and level 5 students get to learn about what a dissertation entails, from those with the most up-to-date experience!

This year, BUDS 2015 is on Wednesday 20th May 2015. We’ve got a record number of 18 fabulous speakers, covering a huge range of different topics! The conference will be in three parts with three sessions running in parallel during each part.

If you are a Level 5 or Level 6 SASS student, and even if you are presenting, you must register for BUDS 2015. Firstly, please take a look at the conference abstracts by clicking here. Choose one session from the red part, one sessionfrom the blue part and one session from the green part and then click here to register your details and session choices. You can also tell us about any specific dietary needs you have, as food and drink will be laid on too!

We hope to see you there!Brighton Undergraduate Dissertation Showcase

Do you want to present a psychology experiment on a computer?

Do you want to present images, text or video to participants, and measure their responses and reaction times accurately,  easily and automatically? If so you need to check out the Psychology lab’s SuperLab software, which is installed on the computers in the lab’s soundproof testing booths. We also have a number of response pads, which can be easily configured to allow participants to quickly and easily interact with your experiments.

You can create whatever experiments you desire. We have pre-programmed the Stroop task and the Implicit association test. Other examples of experiments include tasks  relating to perception and attention, memory, perceptual representation, representation of meaning and reasoning. We can help you with programming your own experiment, whether by providing training or by helping you build the experiment from scratch.

If you are interested in running any of these pre-programmed experiments, creating your own experiment, or just having a look at what SuperLab entails please speak to the psychology technicians. If you would like to have a read about SuperLab and how easy it is to present an experiment, please take a look at the SuperLab manual.

Some of you have seen that the lab is not accepting bookings for today – it is a University of Brighton Open day today and there will be lab tours from 12:00-16:00. If you can, please make alternative arrangements to study, as there will be a lot of disruption.
Massive apologies for the inconvenience, and also for not giving you more notice. Normal service will resume after 4pm today!

Which free online survey should I use?

Third Year Dissertation students are strongly encouraged to use SONA to create their surveys for free, as this also gives a lot of help with recruitment. If you are not using SONA, there are other options. Most people have heard about Surveymonkey, but what about Qualtrics or SogoSurvey? As a student, you really do not have to pay for online survey software. You may find that the free version of Surveymonkey is too limited for your needs – if you do please click the link below for a round-up of some better free options!

Using iPads for qualitative research

Very interesting blog post here from Fiona Macneill (Learning Technologies Advisor) on using iPads for qualitative research, including using them to record interviews and focus groups, and the apps and hardware that may help.

http://blogs.brighton.ac.uk/elearning/2015/03/10/using-an-ipad-for-research/

If anybody is interested in using the apps mentioned here for dissertations or research please speak to me and I’ll get them installed on the Psychology Lab’s iPads. The lab is happy to lend students and staff iPads, mics, voice recorders, video cameras – just click view &  book lab resources to see what we can offer.

Free survey tools

I’m putting together a document comparing the free online survey tools, which I hope will be useful to students thinking about using them. I’ll post it here when it is complete. Although most people have probably come across SurveyMonkey for one reason or another, there are a lot of other free options out there, which depending on your needs may be better for you than SurveyMonkey.

Watch this space..

Hello there! This is the blog of the School of Applied and Social Sciences psychology lab at the University of Brighton. I’m going to blog on all sorts of topics relevant to students and staff. I’ll blog on resources and facilities, new equipment/services, in particular new psychological questionnaires and breaking news on psychological technology. I’ll put guidance here on research methods, study design etc and also post on interesting psychology studies. As I’m new here it will probably take some time to get fully started, please bear with me!

Best wishes,

Joe the psychology technician.
