Women firefighters: the added risks

More female firefighters are being hired but new research, co-led by the University of Brighton, suggests that fire services need to ensure appropriate consideration is given to female specific needs. 

More than 800 women firefighters from 14 different countries, 255 in the UK, told researchers via an online survey that they face injury, illness and heat illness risk at similar rates to that of male firefighters. The report said specific issues such as protective equipment, clothing, health issues and long-term training need further consideration and improvement.   Continue reading

Informing the EIS Pre Tokyo 2020

the students and staff outside Bisham AbbeyOn Wednesday 20 March, Sport and Exercise Science BSc(Hons) students visited Bisham Abbey National Sports Centre to present their dissertation findings to practitioners of the English Institute of Sport (EIS) around optimising performance to the heat expected at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics and Paralympics. Bisham Abbey is one of Sport England’s National Sports Centres and is home to a number of National Governing Bodies of Sport.

It was an early start for the students leaving Eastbourne at 7am on the dot! Once they arrived and after some quick refreshments and putting their posters up, Esme Matthew Co-Head of Physiology at the EIS welcomed them. Dr Neil Maxwell from the University of Brighton gave a short presentation to thank the EIS for the invitation and opportunity for the students to get a glimpse of the challenges the EIS practitioners will face in supporting the elite athletes in the lead up to Tokyo 2020 Games. Women’s football captain invited to home of FC Barcelona

inside the stadiumThe captain of the University of Brighton women’s football first team trod hallowed sporting ground as she took part in a discussion at FC Barcelona’s legendary Nou Camp stadium.

Dominique Beckett visited Barcelona as part of Santander Universities’ Women in Football scheme, which supports female talent in both their sporting and professional lives.

The Physical Education with QTS student was one of a group of leading footballers from women’s clubs at UK universities who participated in a programme of events, tours and training in the Catalan city. Continue reading

Improving our medal chances at the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics

EIS logoA Memorandum of Understanding to signify a statement of intent to collaborate signed between the University of Brighton and the English Institute of Sport (EIS) is providing hands-on benefits for our sport and exercise science students.

The Memorandum of Understanding reflects the on-going support the university’s Environmental Extremes Lab Team are providing the EIS and associated national teams as they prepare for the heat of Tokyo at the 2020 Olympics and Paralympics.

Third year Sport and Exercise Science BSc(Hons) dissertation students are currently involved in eight research projects around the themes of acute and chronic heat alleviation which has been identified by the EIS as priority for improving our chances of securing medals in 2020. Continue reading

Sport and Exercise Science students working in the community

Students on our Sport and Exercise Science BSc(Hons) course have been gaining hands-on experience working in the community as part of their course.

Students on the Personal and Professional Development module have helped with the launch of our new exercise-based cardiac rehabilitation programme, The Active Recovery Programme. The programme has been developed by course leader Dr Louisa Beale in collaboration with Freedom Leisure, with funding from the cancer charity Macmillan Cancer Support via Albion in the Community, and an ECHO grant.

The programme aims to help cancer patients lead more active, healthier and happier lives during every stage of their treatment by improving physical fitness, psychological well-being and quality of life, maintaining a healthy weight, managing side effects of cancer treatment and reducing risk factors for cancer, cardiovascular and other diseases. Boosting facilities for students

the new gym facilitiesA new gym, learning space and seminar room have been unveiled at the University’s Eastbourne campus.

The Queenwood Seminar Room and Social Learning Spaces feature state-of-the-art furniture and technology to facilitate student collaboration. Key additions include two edit suit rooms, USB power chargers throughout and fixed and flexible furniture, including coffee tables and collaboration desks.

The Queenwood G30 seminar room has capacity for 54 people. The space is highly flexible and features bespoke desks that can be folded and stacked away. A height-adjustable lectern provides increased flexibility during lectures. Continue reading

Catching up with Professor Nick Webborn

a picture of Nick with a paralympic athleteAs a preview to his upcoming inaugural lecture we spoke to the clinical professor of sport and exercise medicine at the University.

Nick Webborn OBE has been at the forefront in the development of Paralympic medicine, and is now chair of the British Paralympic Association.

Nick incurred a spinal cord injury while serving in the Royal Air Force in 1981 and his own experience of the rehabilitation process inspired his career in sports medicine. In this episode, ahead of his inaugural lecture on Wednesday 27 February, Paralympic Sports Medicine – The Evolution of a Specialty, Nick traces the story of his career journey and mission to bring the same level of support to Paralympians as Olympians.

Using technology to teach orienteering

students using their phones Trainee teachers of physical education learnt more about ways in which they can integrate technology in physical education lessons and enhance the teaching learning of orienteering.

Traditional versions of orienteering can be more appealing through the use of technology especially if pupils are allowed to use their mobile phones or school devices within physical education lessons.  Trainees learnt more about photo orienteering, the use of QR codes and the use of data collection packages which collects all relevant and programmable information from participants to be quickly shared and recorded. Learning alternative approaches to teaching Athletics

studentsa practising hoppingPGCE and School Direct Physical Education trainee teachers were provided with an alternative approach to the teaching and learning of athletic activities.

Activities specifically for indoor teaching focused on running at maximum speed over short distances and running over obstacles. Trainees learnt to teach jumping events using the basic skills of hopping, leaping, springing, skipping and bounding, and also throwing events that involved throwing balls, quoits, foam javelins, shuttlecocks, bean bags or hoops with pushing, pulling, swinging, slinging and heaving actions.
