Catching up with Professor Nick Webborn

Nick Webborn OBE has been at the forefront in the development of Paralympic medicine, and is now chair of the British Paralympic Association.

Nick incurred a spinal cord injury while serving in the Royal Air Force in 1981 and his own experience of the rehabilitation process inspired his career in sports medicine. In this episode, ahead of his inaugural lecture on Wednesday 27 February, Paralympic Sports Medicine – The Evolution of a Specialty, Nick traces the story of his career journey and mission to bring the same level of support to Paralympians as Olympians.

Our physical education trainee teachers were provided with valuable professional advice when former Principal of the Sir Robert Woodard Academy in Lancing, Peter Midwinter, spoke to them about securing their first teaching position.

The seminar covered application processes, writing a supporting statement, researching the school, interview techniques and other professionally relevant factors. Peter has been a head teacher at four different secondary schools and academies in Sussex. Continue reading

Using technology to teach orienteering

students using their phones Trainee teachers of physical education learnt more about ways in which they can integrate technology in physical education lessons and enhance the teaching learning of orienteering.

Traditional versions of orienteering can be more appealing through the use of technology especially if pupils are allowed to use their mobile phones or school devices within physical education lessons.  Trainees learnt more about photo orienteering, the use of QR codes and the use of data collection packages which collects all relevant and programmable information from participants to be quickly shared and recorded. Learning alternative approaches to teaching Athletics

studentsa practising hoppingPGCE and School Direct Physical Education trainee teachers were provided with an alternative approach to the teaching and learning of athletic activities.

Activities specifically for indoor teaching focused on running at maximum speed over short distances and running over obstacles. Trainees learnt to teach jumping events using the basic skills of hopping, leaping, springing, skipping and bounding, and also throwing events that involved throwing balls, quoits, foam javelins, shuttlecocks, bean bags or hoops with pushing, pulling, swinging, slinging and heaving actions. University of Brighton peace initiative commended in national campaign

A worldwide peace-promoting football programme established by the University of Brighton has been recognised in a national campaign launched by Universities UK.

The Football 4 Peace International scheme, set up in 2001, features in the ‘UK’s Best Breakthroughs’ list, part of the new ‘MadeAtUni’ campaign that celebrates the impact universities have on the wider community.

The list of 100 highlights ground-breaking projects and research which have transformed lives. Universities UK is the representative organisation for all UK universities. Continue reading

Run for the homeless

School of Sport and Service Management and Health Science students joined Eastbourne Boxing Club in a run for the homeless organised by the university’s boxing team.

The event took place at the beginning of December to distribute items to help Eastbourne’s homeless through the cold winter. Donations were received from staff and students, the University of Brighton boxing team and members of Eastbourne Boxing Club.

As the name suggests they group ran through the streets of Eastbourne to hand out the items which included clothing, torches, washing products and food. Continue reading

Harley-Davidson and Identity visit

The students listening to the speakersStudents from the School of Sport and Service Management and the Brighton Business School (based on the Brighton Moulescoomb campus) were visited by Harley-Davidson, including motorbikes, and Identity group.

The afternoon provided an opportunity to meet key figures from both organisations and gain an insight into the importance of events for high-profile brands. Identity is one of the UK’s top event agencies and has clients that include Goole, Warner Bros, Apple, Euro-Tunnel and, of course, Harley-Davidson. Continue reading

Glowing Ofsted report for our teacher training courses

Ofsted Outstanding logoThe University of Brighton’s established strength in teacher training has been acknowledged in an extremely positive Ofsted report.

Our Initial Teacher Education (ITE) Partnership received ratings of ‘outstanding’ for its Early Years, Primary and Secondary Courses and ‘good’ in Further Education and Training.

This makes the University of Brighton the only university in Sussex and Kent rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted for Early Years, Primary and Secondary Initial Teacher Training. Continue reading

Graduate Assessment Centre with Capgemini

Undergraduate and postgraduate students from our tourism, hospitality, retail, sport development and sport studies courses were invited to take part in a mock graduate assessment provided by Capgemini.

Christina Hokland and  Daza Roxana Garcia, who are on our Tourism and International Development MSc, report on the day:

the students listening intently to a presentationWe had the opportunity to meet three members of Capgemini´s team who, with staff at the University, helped us go through a mock assessment. During the session we worked in teams and also did an interview to learn more about our strengths and weaknesses.

In our first activity we got to test our ability in teamwork and how well we work as a group. We had to design a mobile app and had to follow instructions from the organisation. Continue reading
