The Brighton co-founder of a global Football 4 Peace programme was at the New York headquarters of the UN yesterday to debate using sport as a framework to further promote development and peace.
Professor John Sugden, the University of Brighton’s Emeritus Professor of the Sociology of Sport, was preparing for an expert group meeting hosted by the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs.
He was accompanied by his School of Sport and Service Management colleague Graham Spacey, Head of Operations for Football 4 Peace, the award-winning sport and activity-based community initiative which uses sport to reconcile and heal in areas of conflict.
The pair were joined by leading academics and policy developers from across the world including Professor Nico Schulenkorf from the University of Technology, Sydney, and Dr Alexander Cardenas from Colombia who works for Sport for Development and Peace. Both are Ambassadors for Football 4 Peace International.
The meeting aimed to provide input for a report for the Secretary-General on ‘Sport for Development and Peace ‘ to be submitted and discussed at the 73rd session of the United Nations General Assembly in September.
