November 15, 2011 by Robin Englebright

Following the very simple instructions in the JISC online conference activity week SCARLET session, I’ve downloaded Junaio, printed a pretend manuscript, and Bob’s yer uncle we are in AR land…

  2. #jiscel11 activity week begins

The JISC online conference starts officially on the 21st November, but as always there is much more going n around the edges. Much in the way that the Edinburgh Fringe has overtaken the the Edinburgh Festival. This year I’ve been snowed under with #coursedata work, and the online conference has sneaked up on me. There’s an awful lot to see, so I thought I’d start with one of the projects I knew something about.
Project SCARLET is a one year LTIG ( Learning and Teaching Innovation Grant) project, that is investigating the use of augmented reality to support teaching with original artefacts that don’t bear repeated handling, such as the Dante manuscripts.
The project is about half way through and give a really concise summary of their activity to date.
The project will produce a toolkit, which will allow others to build similar experiences. I could see applications in so many situations… Back when I used to teach agricultural engineers, it could have added markers to a tractor engine bay with maintenance videos, or just labelling components… and could change them for different scenarios…
I await to toolkit in the new year eagerly.
