Listen: Expert of the Week: Increasing student interest and engagement

Expertise is something students often assume belongs only to the teacher. In an oline world, expertise if at all of our fingertips, a few moments away from a search engine.

This activity is a way to build student engagement and interest by making use of the idea that expertise is at least partly shared between teacher and student. It is also an example of a very powerful little truth about online learning:

Create lots of  quick easy and “little opportunities” for students to experience a sense of achievement. I think this sense of regularly and quick and easy achievement is also important for the wellbeing of teachers as well!

At the end of each session set an asynchronous task for 2-3 students working together. In smaller groups it could involve one student…

Example questions for expert of the week:

Find three examples of how compnaies have successfuly implemented Agile Manufacturing

What leglislation is most recent regarding selling microelectromics into the EU?

What academic research has most recently looked at team working in a virtual meeting?

Who are the key influential thinkers in the field of Artificial Intelligence and Ethics?

Tips:

You could let students decide who they want to work with.

It can be fun to ask students who are experts for one week to pass the baton to the next group of students or student.

You may need to message the students a reminder before the next online lecture or seminar.
