My alphabet

Monday 26th January

So as a two week project my partner and I had to come up with out typography. We were given the task of creating an inventive alphabet; we chose to use food and after stumbling across a Facebook page called Saipanckaes, we decided to use pancakes!

Creating the letters was harder than it first looked as the mixture tended to run and thus did to create the shape we were after however after some practice and patience we made our letters!

Analysing a 30 second commercial; J’adore Dior.

Wednesday 21st January

Our latest task it to take 30 seconds of a commercial and analyse why the producers have decided to portray it in the way they have, I chose to look at Dior because it the one the springs to my mind quickest and one of my favourite adverts of all time. I love the elegance and class Charlize Theron possesses. She is a goddess in gold in this advertisement and I think, really sells the product well.

Guy Bourdin, Grayson Perry, Taylor Wessing and The wounded exhibition.

Monday 19th January

Guy Bourdin Exhibition:

I really enjoyed this exhibition and the vast amount of work portrayed. I felt that the layout was designed to a really high standard and loved the way in which every way flowed however wasn’t in the same layout. The moving images section being in the space it was in also worked really well I think and made you feel consumed by what you were seeing.

Grayson Perry Exhibition:

This exhibition was in complete contrast to Guy Bourdin in that is was placed in random places throughout the upstairs of the National Portrait Gallery in which meant we were to follow a map. I actually really enjoyed the difference in the way you had to go and find the pieces of work to look at. It made it an activity and built up the tension to look at the different piece of work. I think Grayson’s work is inspiring and I really enjoyed looking at some 3D art.

Taylor Wessing Exhibition:

We were not allowed to take any photographs of the work we were looking at which was quite frustrating I must say however it has also meant that the pieces that stood out most are obvious, as they are the few that have stayed in my mind. The first was a photograph that one first place in the Photographer’s Portrait Prize competition and I could see why. Within this photograph were people around a cramped looking table accompanied by a dog, the scene conveyed such strong and realistic features it made you feel as if you were there, it was one of fun and happiness. Another photograph was on of two boy twins; both had blonde hair and were crouched down in front of a tree. It reminded me of feeling innocent, when the outdoors was somewhere adventures happened and a time when I remember not feeling responsibility for myself, the feeling of freedom. The last picture that stands out is one of a woman holding her newborn baby straight after giving birth. You can see the umbilical cord all purple and fresh and the baby looks so fragile. The mother is cradling it so to protect it from the world as well as consume herself in this miracle she has created.

Wounded: The Legacy of War.

This exhibition I found extremely moving and it really had an impact on my day. Looking at what these people had been though fighting for our country and actually seeing the impact it had on their lives really made me think about how lucky I am not to be in their situation. I also noticed that there was only one woman in the whole exhibition which i felt was rather strange. I know it is less common or woman to be in the army however I’m sure there is more than just one that has been affected.

I was sat ready the book that goes into detail about what had happened to each individual when my friend Maddy explained how one the men taking part in the Paralympics  spoke about how he hated people feeling sorry for him and that it was actually ‘the best thing that had happened to him’. I sat confused but she then explained how he simply said that he’d done more with one leg for the world than he could ever do with one and that I just found inspiring. I think for him to be able to look at the world with the attitude that his ‘glass is half full’ is what life is all about, you pul yourself together and get on with the time you have.

Looking at Layout

Friday 23rd January

Today we had the pleasure of meeting Joao and with him we went though the basics of how to use InDesign as well as looking at how different magazines use layout and typography within them. I found the session extremely useful and informative and feel that the skills taught during these session will be of great use.

Joao went through the ‘Grid System’ and explained how it is used throughout the industry to create the desired layout. He explained that text boxes with simple squares with lines in them like a notebook, and an image has a big cross in them. He then went on to explain that the gutter is extremely important and that when making a book it can be crucial as you need the right amount to ensure the pages fit together in a way that the content doesn’t get lost within the seam.

Further more went through the idea of editorial flow and how pages need to make sense as you go thought them. The bleed were told is normally 3mm as you always overlap the page to ensure that you don’t get a white border around the edge of the page.

I addition to this he showed us example of parallax scrolling which I thought was brilliant and extremely clever. The idea of scrolling down but not actually scrolling down many pages is genius! I loved the animation of it all and the fun aspect it possess.

And finally he listed many different magazines that we should have a look at such as:

-VOLT
-ANOTHER MAN
-GENTLEWOMAN
-FANTASTIC MAN
-PURPLE
-P MAGAZINE
-VISIONAIRE
-HEART

We were told to get into pairs, making sure we hadn’t worked with this person previously so to make new friends and new connections. Me and Maddy started to brain storm ideas together and this is where we are so far:

Introduction to AD138

Monday 5th January

For the first seminar of 2015 was in both form of a more detailed briefing for our next module; Introduction to fashion illustration and drawing! I’m really looking forward to learning new skills and being part of some more physical interacting classes. I myself am not the best at drawing fashion illustrations so I am excited to see what I can produce within the next few weeks.

The aims for our brief are:

1. To introduce students into fashion drawing, imaging processes and their roles in the fashion communication industry

2. To learn specialist techniques and become confident with specialist tools and equipment through project work, research and experiment in prac/ce

3. To experiment with different techniques, ideas and outputs within project briefs and sketchbook work

4. To prac/ce professionalism by commiRng to studio prac/ce through recording professional development, through crea/ng a blog and PDP

Initially we looked at some examples of how to produce fashion illustrations that are in proportion:

We then had a chance to practise and remind ourselves of how to use a pencil (it has been a while i must admit!)
