Assessment in practice

Practice asssessors should be clear in the process of completing assessments and providing a rationale for their assessment decision.

This should be the same for students too!

Introduce ‘safe spaces‘ whereby a student can share if they do not feel confident / proficient and supported with how to achieve.

This encourages reflection and self-awareness so that the student knows they are safe and effective not just becasue someone else tells them.

Involvement of the service user in assessment see Standards Part 1 5.14

Experts by experience have a valuable role in conrtbuting to the assessment of student nurses.  Examples of assessment straegies include:

  • OSCEs
  • Proficiencies
  • Feedback on a care episode
  • Skills
  • Research proposals

Need to consider the type of feedback and involvement of a service user .  I.e. what can a service user provide from their perspective?

Training will likely need to be given and the most effective method would be tripartite i.e. student > service user > practice assessor.
