‘The Queen of Code’ is a short documentary directed by actress Gillian Jacobs focusing on the tech legend, a pioneer in the field of computer programming, that is Grace Hopper. Hopper’s legacy is something that inspired thousands of women to get into the tech industry, as we all know that we view the tech industry as one dominated by men. At a time where women stepped up to do ‘male’ jobs, Hopper proved that she was one of, if not, the best in her field. COBOL is the programming language that Hopper helped design and develop, and Hopper’s belief that programs should be written in a language that resembled closely to English was captured in the new business language, and COBOL went on to be the most ubiquitous business language to date. ‘Women in tech’ is something that I definitely want to explore further and see how this ‘pink-collar’ profession is actually incredibly difficult and women do not get enough recognition for their accomplishments in this field.
The documentary by Jacobs can be found on vimeo but unfortunately due to the video’s privacy settings the video couldn’t be uploaded here.
