The Final Editorial

The denim jacket has been a very important part of fashion history. Levi Strauss, the man responsible for the up rise of denim is one of the most important fashion figures when it comes to the ethical fabric and its longevity throughout the fashion industry. The denim jacket is timeless and will always be celebrated within fashion.

“It became the jacket of choice for rebel teens in the ’50s, for dropout hippies in the ’60s and was ripped at the seams by punks in the ’70s. Worn by the working class and celebrities alike, the denim jacket has a lasting universal appeal.” – Rokit London

To me the denim jacket is a classic, versatile piece of outerwear that anybody at all can pull off. It has been ripped up, embroidered, acid washed and illustrated on, to create a diverse mix of personal styles and identities. I’ve personally only ever owned one denim jacket but it has lasted me many years and there are still plenty to come.

The first project of the year was always about having fun with it and experimenting with my ideas. This shoot is here to resemble that. I love flash photography and bright, contrasting colours, I find they make for more interesting images. These photos are here to show innocence and fun. They’re not too serious, and not that representative of the denim jacket’s rich history and influences. They are exclusively the mood I was in when creating my work, and I think it also evokes a contented mood for whoever may view it.

I wanted to get a feel for Brighton, as it’s a new place I have yet to fully explore. I felt the beach would be too easy and predictable, even though it is beautiful and completely different to where I used to live. The Level is a great space, and a place always buzzing with skateboarders and teens, exploring their own identities. I felt it was an excellent place to have a bit of fun with the shoot and capture genuine emotion and enjoyment in my photographs. I like to think that I have achieved that.
