In October 2017 a small group travelled to Nepal in a self-funded trip to visit the school and to commemorate the life of Kevin Fossey. Here’s their story:
For a number of years, the School of Education has supported a small school in a rural village in Nepal. Kevin Fossey, a senior lecturer and former head teacher, who sadly passed away in 2016, initiated the project. As friends and colleagues we wanted to take the opportunity to see the school but to also make a fitting tribute for Kevin.
We spent the first few days in Kathmandu. The city is difficult to describe –it is vibrant, polluted, overcrowded, busy, spiritual and exceptionally interesting.
We went shopping with the outgoing head teacher and her colleague to purchase the following items for the school:
- Miscellaneous arts, crafts, stationery and other class resources/games
- Teachers aprons
- Material for children’s aprons
- Speaker/PA system

As the image shows the school building was severly damaged in the recent earthquake.
A qualified engineer has now visited to asses the damage and the dining and kitchen building will need to be rebuilt however the other buildings are repairable. Continue reading
Since our last update and in response to our subsequent radio appeal (Radio Sussex) and television coverage (The Vote, latest TV) the Malagiri Relief fund has been inundated with contributions. Justgiving donations currently amounts to £ 8,866 and in addition to the £500 we initially sent we will now be sending a transfer of some of this accrued fund for immediate relief for the community, prior to the start of the approaching monsoon season. We are working with our local contacts to assess the damage to the school and to further evaluate the immediate needs of the community so that we can disseminate the remaining funds to Malagiri appropriately. We have now received more information from Nepal. A visitor from Belgium (and friend of our sister organisation, Trinity) was in Nepal at the time of the earthquake and she has visited Malagiri. The school is still intact but, unfortunately, it has sustained extensive damage. There are large cracks in the walls and on the ground. Continue reading
