‘So, why do you want to work for us?’

‘So, why do you want to work for us?’ is a very common question at interview. You should also discuss this in a cover letter.

Your answer could cover some of the following:

  • The company’s reputation: ‘I would like to work for a market-leading accountancy company’.
  • The quality of its products or services: ‘I am aware of your new exciting product ranges, such as….’
  • The training it provides for its staff: ‘Your company takes on industrial placement students each year and you receive tremendous feedback for your training on Rate my Placement from those students’.
  • The Ethics and the culture at the company

You may have heard yesterday on the BBC about The Tree Conference which took place in Frome, Somerset: http://thetreeconference.com/

Experts there highlighted the vital role trees and reforestation can play in limiting climate change – in response to the new Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) report urging for global warming to be kept within 1.5C.

This brought to mind the work that The Enterprise Rent-A-Car Foundation is doing – funding the planting of 50 million trees throughout the US, Canada, France, Germany, Spain and the UK: https://www.enterpriseholdings.com/en/corporate-social-responsibility/philanthropic-initiatives/enterprise-rent-a-car-50-million-tree-pledge.html

Each project is individually selected to prioritize immediate reforestation needs and to help restore ecosystems after wildfires or other natural disaster strike. The Enterprise 50 Million Tree Pledge will have planted 13 million trees by the end of 2018 – and 50 million trees by 2056.

2018 is the 11th year Enterprise has planted trees in the UK. More than 850,000 trees have been planted to date in the UK.

One way in which we can change the future of our planet is by making companies aware that we want their products to be ethically produced and packaged, and that we want to work for companies that behave ethically.

Enterprise Rent-a-Car and Computacenter: Two of our Favourite Things

This is an important post as it provides information on two of our favourite employers of placement students. We have a close working relationship with them.

The first of those companies is Enterprise Rent-a-Car.

Enterprise has won numerous awards for its placement scheme and has vacancies in a large number of its bases.

Do you have a passion for customer service? Do you want responsibility? And fast track progression into Management?

As a Management Trainee, your duties will include providing customers with a great customer experience, you’ll be marketing their business, selling their service and liaising with insurance companies, dealerships, body shops and corporations. Not to mention all the day-to-day stuff, like office management and administration as well as collecting and delivering vehicles and keeping them clean.

The second company is Computacenter. It provides computer services to public and private sector customers.

Their roles are based in central London and Hatfield, Hertfordshire. They have a variety of roles which you can find on JobTeaser. The role I would like to highlight here is their Business Management (IT Services) role.

This is a fantastic company to work for. In addition, they are offering you a fast track application process. If you would like to be considered for an interview, please email your CV to me at l.rush@brighton.ac.uk as soon as possible.

Here is a link to the job description: https://jobsearch.computacenter.com/jobs/job/Business-Management-IT-Services-Industrial-Placement/2353

You do not need to have any specific IT knowledge to apply. They accept applications from all degree disciplines not just IT as this is a business placement not a technical IT placement.

We have two students working at Computacenter this year.

Congratulations to those that have already succeeded in getting an industrial placement. Well done! There are currently 113 of you.

Those of you still looking have until the start of term to get a placement. There is still time.

If you would like to look at your CV again, take a look at lynda.com – as a University of Brighton student, you have free access to this.

In their library, search on ‘CV’. You will find ‘CV Success Master Class’ by Aimee Bateman from careercake.com.

I have just viewed the section ‘Your CV layout’ and revised lots of my own CV. It is an excellent presentation!

Best of luck!

Great opportunities in the Netherlands: Just do it!

This is news of some great opportunities! So good, the jobs made the front page of the blog rather than the ‘Jobs of the Week’ page.

We have been contacted by Converse / Nike near Amsterdam. They have 3 Finance roles available for placement students.

The main recruiter is an ex-University of Brighton student. He really wants University of Brighton students to apply. We have had an excellent relationship with Nike in Amsterdam over many years.

You need not need to send a cover letter (despite what the attachment on JobTeaser says). Just send a CV to internships.ehq@nike.com

Please do this as soon as possible! The jobs are to start at the beginning of August.

If you need help with your CV, please email it to me at l.rush@brighton.ac.uk

Best of luck!

90+ students going out on placement this year….and counting!

Congratulations to all those 90+ students going out on placement this year! You have made a fantastic effort to get there!

We have students at major blue chips such as Warner Brothers, SAP, Xerox, Deloitte, and Oracle.

We have some at smaller local companies such as Crunch Accounting, Graduate Recruitment Bureau, Quintessence, and The Pensions Regulator. Students are working as far away as Cyprus and India.

Well done to all!

There is still time to get that placement role. There are still vacancies on JobTeaser! Let’s keep counting!

If you need help, please email me at l.rush@brighton.ac.uk or call me on 01273 642167.

Goodbye and good luck to our final years!

June is both a happy and a sad month – sad to say good bye to our final years but also glad to see them launch themselves into their future lives.

Please forgive me if I miss you off my list but, of those who did a placement year, I will especially remember Patrick, Vels, Lucie, Freya, Tegh, Josh, and Jade. O, and Paige!

Paige did her HR placement at Discovery and is about to start her post-university career. You all made it worthwhile for us in the Placements Office but Paige made it worthwhile for me. Very best of luck, Paige!

We wish you all good luck and good bye!!!

Congratulations! We in the Employability Hub salute you!

Congratulations!

We in the Employability Hub (Placements Office) salute you!

Currently, 74 of you have secured an industrial placement for next year. That puts you ahead of last year’s students at the same time.

We are still hoping that at least another 60 of you will be successful.

Apart from public bank holidays (and weekends!), someone will be in the office every day to offer you help.
