It is the last day of term! Phew! I hope that you all have had a successful start to your second year.

The Holidays are a great time to making those placement applications. (But rest up too!)

The university and the Placement Office / Employability Hub is closed from 4pm Friday 21st December and reopens on 2nd January. So, no emails will be dealt with during this time. We will be too busy helping Santa.

There is still plenty of time to get a placement. There are still plenty of jobs available.

Join an award winning team at House of Hud!

The House of Hud has just won an award at The Wedding Industry Awards 2018 – Regional Winner – Venue Stylist – South East. Congratulations to them! The picture features Zain (far right), Katherine Hudson (next to her) and our other placement student there – Charlotte.

‘I am an international student from Jordan, and when I first started my course in Business Management with Marketing at the University of Brighton, I wanted to take every opportunity such education could offer. So I was eager to take a placement year, to get a glimpse of work life and test the waters of the field of my future career.

I am currently a Marketing Executive at House of Hud, which is a local company located just 40 minutes away from Brighton. There, and because it is a small-scale business, I speak my mind knowing that my voice is heard, and I feel appreciated for being a student with a fresh mentality.

Work-life significantly differs from student-life, and in a very good way; it has shaped my lifestyle into a healthy and active one. Having a job has inspired me to better manage my time, hence allowing me to think of interests, hobbies, and activities with which I want to fill up my free time.

Moreover, placement year has reminded me of my capacity to learn; I overcame anxieties about not having enough knowledge, and soon realized that I can learn along the way and pick up new skills. It’s also nice to be exposed to different tasks; one day I find myself handling web-design, another day I’m helping crew members set up for a photoshoot, or I’m attending an awards ceremony.

My journey so far has been eye-opening; in addition to communicating with other people from the industry, I’ve also explored more sides to the world of marketing and management. Work-environment at House of Hud especially promotes creativity and flexibility; it’s driven me to hunt for inspiration, whether I was working at the office, from a coffee shop in town, or from the comfort of my home.

All in all, placement year is a great example of the continuous nature of learning; it has allowed me to apply the lessons I’ve learn at university to real life situations, and now I look forward to applying lessons learnt from work to the coursework I’ll be doing in my final year’.

Computacenter: where the culture is brilliant!

I have just had an update from Matt, one of our Placement Students at Computacenter. He is really doing a great job with a great company. Why not apply for one of their placement roles?

I’m Matt, an undergraduate studying Business Management at Brighton. I am currently on a 13 month placement with Computacenter. I am working within the Customer Value team, so my job is consulting service managers on how to deliver maximum value to our customers such as: Channel 4, the NHS, Heathrow Airport, Royal Mail and many more big names! I do this by specialising in 3 things: innovation, value add and continual service improvement. This is with the outcome of growing and renewing contracts.  

The culture here is brilliant, everyone is friendly and you can interact with the leadership team very easily considering the size of Computacenter – more than 14,000 employees worldwide and revenues over £3.7bn!  

There are lots of great opportunities, in my fourth month I hosted my own event on Presentation Skills which was backed by the UK Managing Director. 

Brighton has a very good placement track record with Computacenter as 4 students have been selected over the past 2 years. Get in touch with Leigh and the placements team to book onto our mock assessment centre in January!

Update from Elisa at Warner Brothers: a really great program!

I have just received this from Elisa, who is a University of Brighton student on placement at Warner Brothers. She is having a really rewarding time.

‘I am the current intern for the Warner Bros. Finance and Business Development placement at Filmbankmedia.

My job consists in a variety of different tasks I am expected to complete both weekly and monthly, such as managing international accounts, placing film orders, creating newsletters, amending contracts and update variance analyses.

In addition, I was involved in new business research to expand the company’s business in various parts of Europe and Latin America and my team has been incredibly supportive in every step, allowing me to grow confidence and experience in various fields due to the amount of responsibilities I have been trusted with from the start.

They have a really great program and I am learning so much!’

Design Thinking with SAP – come along to this event to get a step ahead in performing well at assessment centres. Find out more about SAP and how you can perform better in assessments using Design Thinking, a methodology that uses empathy to understand stakeholder’s objectives and problems. The session will be fun and informal, and give you a better insight into how to succeed in securing your placement – 12-1pm room 153. Book by emailing: placements.business@brighton.ac.uk

Careers Fair! Next Wednesday!

Next Wednesday, 7th November, is the date for this year’s Careers Fair. It is at the Amex Stadium, 11am till 3pm.

It is a really exciting and a great opportunity to meet employers. Don’t be shy. They want to meet you. Why not take your CV along?

Customer & Communications BAME Internship

Following on from my previous blog regarding Black History Month which celebrates Black achievement, I am posting details of a Customer & Communications BAME Internship, which aims to increase the representation of students of African, Afro-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese origin in marketing and communications. The role is with Transport for London.

The Customer and Communications Internship is a diversity initiative targeted at students of African, Afro-Caribbean, Asian or Chinese origin (or combinations of the above) who are studying, have recently graduated, or have demonstrated an interest in the marketing or communications industry. These groups are under-represented regionally, and nationally, in marketing and communications which is why this scheme has been created.

Entry requirements
You must be an undergraduate or recent graduate of BAME (as defined below) origin on track to receive, or have already achieved, a 2:2 in any degree, or, have no more than one year’s experience in the communications industry – such as in marketing, stakeholder engagement, public affairs or other related field.

What you’ll be doing

Working in a fast-paced marketing and communications environment based in TfL’s Head office, you will have the opportunity to develop your skills in creating campaigns, developing customer messaging and influence customer behaviour to help you start your career.

You will be involved in key projects and campaigns and have the opportunity to gain experience in another team, giving you a broader experience of how marketing and communications works at TfL. Throughout your time, you will work collaboratively with other teams across the business, and gain an understanding of transport as well as marketing and communications.

Black History Month

This month is Black History month. You can find more about this here: http://www.blackhistorymonth.org.uk/

In this post, I would like to celebrate the achievements of one black person very close to home.

Bert Williams MBE is the driving force behind Brighton and Hove Black History. In the Summer of 2017, he received an honorary Doctor of Letters from this university for his contribution to the promotion of race equality in the local region.

I know Bert through work he did for Brighton Museum & Art Gallery and I still see him of an occasion at reggae gigs. He is a lovely guy and a terrific representative of his community, very worthy of his honorary doctorate.
