So we have come to the end of the summer and the new academic year starts on Monday.
There are 140 of you on or going out on placement this year. Well done!
Congratulations to those who were successful! Hard luck to those who tried but were unable to get a placement!
If you are on placement, we will see you at times over the coming year.
It has been great working with you all.
Very best wishes to all of you!
Congratulations to all those 126 students going out on placement this year! You have made a fantastic effort to get there! Well done!
We have students at major blue chips such as IBM, Xerox and Marks & Spencer. We have some at smaller local companies such as ILG, House of Hud and The Graduate Recruitment Agency. Students are working as far away as Australia and Pakistan.
Well done to all!
There is still time to get that placement role. There are still vacancies on studentcentral! Let’s keep counting!
This is a great time to be applying for a placement. Why?, I hear you ask.
- Well, there are still lots of placements available. Take a look at studentcentral. It’s full of placement jobs.
- Secondly, lots of students have stopped looking – hopefully, not you!
- Thirdly, we in the Placements Office are here to give you even more attention.
So, best of luck and keep applying!

I hope that you are all aware of Glassdoor but here is a reminder.
Glassdoor is one the fastest growing jobs and recruiting sites.
On the site, you can:
- Search for jobs
- Get an insight into companies with employee reviews
- See what previous applicants have been asked at interview – I think that this is really useful!
This is their website: www.glassdoor.co.uk
Today I am celebrating that 100 of you have already got an industrial placement for next year! Well done!
Here is a picture of Matt Prior, Sussex and England, celebrating a century. Geddit?
We are, in fact, not out as we are hoping that another 40-50 more of you will get one too. It’s not all over.
- There are still plenty of jobs on studentcentral.
- We will be putting more on.
- We are here all the way through the summer to help you.
I hope that all your exams have gone well. I strongly recommend a bit of relaxation.
However, do not relax for too long because there is still plenty of time to get that placement job.
More than 90 of you already have successfully gained placements. Well done! We expect that another 40+ of you will get placements over the summer months.
The Placements Office will be staffed throughout the summer. So, come in and see us, email or call us.
Telephone us on 01273 642168, 01273 642167 or 01273 642343.

Let’s make this a bumper year for students getting industrial placements!
I hope that you all appreciate the value of doing an industrial placement but I want to share with you the following from Josh who is currently on placement at Coast to Capital.
‘I’m doing well, the placement’s still great, I get to do a bit of everything to fill gaps as needed. It’s a nice role with a lot of autonomy, it’s what you make it really.
For example, since I didn’t have a placement until September I started learning Russian over last summer. My role here has taken on a focus on international trade and as luck would have it I’m now in talks with a company from Russia about them maybe coming to the area, and I’ll be doing a Skype call with them tomorrow. I’m also getting funded by Coast to Capital to go to an event by the Russo-British Chamber of Commerce in London soon, where I’ll get to introduce both Coast to Capital and myself to even more of these businesses.
Point being for a student who wants a dynamic role in a small, open organization, this one is pretty awesome! I can’t think of anyone here I would consider unapproachable’.
Well done, Josh!
Josh is doing the role that I emailed about yesterday – as a Service Pillar Support Assistant. The role is open till the 30th May. Get applying, please!
The details are on studentcentral. See Virginia’s favourite jobs.
Best of luck!
Congratulations to Reade Whiteman, who is our 66th student to get an industrial placement this year.
Reade showed huge persistence and self-belief to be successful in getting a placement as an Operations Manager with GIST.
He gained one of 15 places, beating over 900 other candidates and fighting his way through 5 different application stages! What an achievement!
There are still lots of placements available and lots of time to apply.
Get your kicks on Route 66!
Hi and welcome back!
On Weds 26th April, we have 2 great events running.
1-2pm – SHUT UP & WRITE YOUR APPLICATION! If you’re procrastinating and haven’t got round to submitting a placement application yet or want to get another one under your belt, come along to room 150 where Clare and I will be on hand to help you through the application process. Bring your laptops!
2-3pm – HOUSE OF HUD PR & MARKETING PLACEMENT TALK – If you’re looking for a local marketing placement role and would like to meet the founder and director of House of Hud, as well as their current placement student (also from UoB), then join us in room 150 for a short presentation about the company and role, with time for questions.
Any questions – please email us at firstname.lastname@example.org or email@example.com
See you on Wednesday!
