This is what I took from the chapter ‘Selecting the Subject’ in the book On Being a Photographer, written by David Hurn, in conversation with Bill Jay.

  • Photography is a passion that many people have, however they are unsure how to succeed in taking photos
  • A photographer muse be truly interested in it and not just do it for the visuals
  • Intense drive is required
  • One needs to photograph something that interests them instead of someone telling them what to photograph
  • Photos should tell viewers what the photographer is passionate about.

These key points resonated with me because I am very passionate about photography as a whole. I am also passionate about my project as I love taking photos of nature, whether that be landscapes or close ups of small details that could be missed.

These key points are relevant as they reflect what makes a true photographer and they display that it takes a lot of hard work in order to succeed.

One quote that stood out to me was “You are not a photographer because you are interested in photography” (Hurn, 2001: 28). This is because many people have a fascination with photography and enjoy taking quick photos to show where they’ve been, however, it takes passion and an intense drive to be a successful photographer
