Reflective Blog on IT282-Digital Marketing Group Assignment

Positives experiences

One benefit of this being a group project was that each group member could focus on topics within the presentation that they knew more about or had an interest in. For me personally within this project, it meant that I could produce the slides based on online revenue streams and online value proposition (OVP).

Another positive point of this group project was that each individual member brought different ideas and insights with them. Allowing us a group to approach the task from several different angles, we then decided on which ideas we as a group liked the most and used this approach for the assignment. A range of ideas were utilised within the presentation to allow us to cover all topics from a multiple viewpoints ensuring nothing was excluded from the presentation.

As we were a team of five members we could test the companies website that had selected to analyse by all attempting to accessing it at the same time. we then all tried to use certain on the website at the same time to see if the website could handle this sudden surge in activity/traffic, this would not have been possible if it was an individual assignment.

Learning points

A difficulty we faced during group project was ensuring that are individuals slides fitted together to create a coherent professional presentation, for example we tried to use a common layout throughout the presentation. Then the slides had to be reviewed to check that we covered all the required content and that we hadn’t duplicated any topics, we found that we had discussed some concepts twice. So we had to edit the slides so there was little to no overlapping creating a more interesting and engaging presentation.

Though we used an online PowerPoint allowing us all to edit the presentation in real time with each other, we still had to find to physically meet as a group to collaborate and rehearse the presentation. We had to this because it is easier to work together when we’re all in the same room and can discuss ideas with each other. Meeting up to rehearse the presentation once we had completed was crucial so that we could work on timing

Due to us only being allowed to select one business to analyse, we didn’t get to compare the different approaches companies from different industries use when it comes to digital marketing. I would expect to see a fashion retailer to have a vastly different approach to digital marketing than a wholesale foods manufacturer. This would have given us unique insight into digital marketing and how companies even in the same industry will use different methods for social media.

Conclusion

Overall the group assignment provided many different opportunities to learn about digital marketing. The best part of the project was how I got see the theoretical concepts and topics that we learnt about in lectures and seminar being used by real businesses. It demonstrated just how many different roles there are within the digital marketing sector and possible future career oppurtunities
