Pre-course materials

For September:

  1. Read the article listed below*; summarise the key messages outlined in the text; consider how it fits with your philosophy and experiences of teaching and learning mathematics; and come prepared to discuss.
  2. Identify one short piece of reading that has had an impact on how you think about learning and/or teaching mathematics. Bring a copy of the article and be prepared to discuss.
  3. Listen to the Mr Barton Maths Podcast entitled Will Emeny – Great Maths Teaching Ideas and Numeracy Ninjas (http://www.mrbartonmaths.com/blog/10-will-emeny-great-maths-teaching-ideas-and-numeracy-ninjas/). Note key ideas as you listen and also note down any questions you may have or any concepts mentioned that you want to explore further.  You can also access this podcast through the usual apps.
  4. Write a short article (about 300-words) about yourself outlining your motivations for wanting to become a maths teacher and the kind of teacher you aspire to become.
  5. Become familiar with the KS3 and KS4 National Curricula: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/national-curriculum-in-england-mathematics-programmes-of-study

If you have any questions about these or any aspect of the course just email Páraic Treacy: P.Treacy@brighton.ac.uk

Otherwise, we look forward to seeing you in September.
