Times Education Awards nomination
Huw Taylor and James Ebdon, of the Aquatic Research Centre based in our school, are in the running for the International Collaboration of the Year Award (sponsored by Shakespeare Martineau) in this year’s Times Higher Education (THE) Awards.
James and Huw were commissioned by UNICEF to work with colleagues at the University of Malawi to investigate options for providing safe water in rural Malawi.
1,000 children under five years of age die from water-related illnesses every month in Malawi, but by improving drinking water and sanitation, these diseases can be reduced by nearly 90%. This project offers a valuable ‘blueprint’ for new ways to reduce excreta-related disease associated with water supply and sanitation.
“This accolade demonstrates the important contribution that African universities can make to the challenges of the continent, amongst which the provision of safe water and sanitation for all is foremost. UK universities, including the University of Brighton, can play a pivotal role in linking African universities with the global academic community and we were very pleased to have this opportunity both to work closely with our colleagues at the University of Malawi and to contribute to the global drive for safer drinking water,” said James.
The winners of this year’s THE Awards will be announced on 26 November.
