Common Core Grading Rubrics in Turnitin

Turnitin has released six writing rubrics that are aligned to the Common Core State Standards (CCSS). These new rubrics can be downloaded from the Common Core Rubric Pack (.zip) and the resulting .RBC files imported into your Rubric Library.

These CCSS-aligned writing rubrics were developed for Turnitin by the English Professional Learning Council for grades 9-10 and 11-12 for Informative, Argumentative, and Narrative text types so may not be directly appropriate for UK higher eduaction marking (especially as they were designed with the US market in mind) but could be useful if you wanted to have ready-made rubrics which you could quickly adapt to suit your purpose.

“The Common Core rubrics allow instructors at all levels to promote more success in student writing,” said Dawn Lewis, instructor at Aliso Niguel High School. “The rubrics help narrow the expectations and language gap, especially for assessment, between secondary education and higher education.”

I have been working in the Educational Technology field within Higher Education for eleven years. A big part of my job is finding new and innovative ways of integrating technology into current teaching and learning methodology. This can include assisting academic staff with Virtual Learning Environments/Learning Management Systems (Blackboard), implementing specific software packages, maximising current technologies and championing new ones. I find this profession both riveting and rewarding. I really enjoy life on the cutting edge, but I also enjoy being able to help staff achieve small and meaningful efficiencies; sometimes that makes all the difference.
