Education Research Seminar – 9 February 2017

The Education Research Centre and School of Education presented this seminar on 9th February 2017:

Teacher educators are professional learners too! – findings from an international comparative needs analysis of the professional learning needs of teacher educators

Dr Gerry Czerniawski, The Cass School of Education and Communities, University of East London

At a time when many industrialised countries are engaged in systemic educational reform, Gerry Czerniawski discussed a study he has been involved in that provides an international and comparative needs analysis through a survey of 1,158 higher education-based teacher educators in the countries participating in the International Forum for Teacher Educator Development (InFo-TED): Belgium, Ireland, Israel, the Netherlands, Norway and the UK.

The results suggest that while teacher educators are only moderately satisfied with their professional development experiences, a strong desire exists for further professional learning. This desire, influenced by their professional context, relates to their current beliefs concerning ‘best practice’ in teacher education, the academic skills required to further their professional careers and knowledge of the curriculum associated with their fields of expertise

Gerry Czerniawski is Professor of Education at the University of East London’s Cass School of Education and Communities where he runs the doctoral programmes in education (PhD and EdD). In addition to his role as a researcher, author and teacher educator he is the Chair of the British Curriculum Forum, Lead Editor of the BERA Blog and a trustee and council member of the British Educational Research Association (BERA).  Gerry passionately worked as a teacher in the multi-cultural environment in the London Borough of Newham for ten years teaching humanities, sociology and business studies at secondary and post-sixteen levels before gradually moving into teaching within Higher Education within both the political sciences and education (The Open University, University of Northampton, London Metropolitan University and London University’s Institute of Education).  He is a founding member of the International Forum for Teacher Educator Development (InFo-TED) and is a National Teaching Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA).
