Troop to Teachers Success

Troops to Teacher (TtT) student Andy Watts shared in the accolades at the 2016 Pearson Teaching Awards.

The Head Teacher of the Year in a Primary School title went to former Royal Artillery officer Matt Middlemore, a supporter of the TtT programme, who said he wished he could give pieces of the  trophy to pupils, parents and teachers who have helped turn the school around.

Andy featured in a BBC film shown during the awards night at the Guildhall in London, hosted by comedian and actor Hugh Dennis.

Andy is undertaking two years of employment-based training at Matt’s school, Tregolls in Truro, which was one of the worst performing when Matt took over and is now one of the best.

Andy said: “Matt supports Troops to Teachers and that scheme allows ex-servicemen like myself – I just left in June of this year – to join a two-year programme to become a fully-qualified teacher.

“Matt has the knack to get everybody to give that extra 10 per cent more. And there’s no end to what you can achieve.”
