Architectural Technology Membership and Professional Development Session was held at School of Environment and Technology, University of Brighton on Friday 15 March 2019.
More than 300 jobs have been created and 70 new products launched with support from a University of Brighton green business organisation.
The figures were released as the University’s Green Growth Platform received a progress report from the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE), the Platform’s original funder.
HEFCE said the Platform had “met or exceeded” all of its objectives, set out when it was launched in 2014.
Zoë Osmond, Director of Green Growth Platform, said: “We are delighted to have successfully delivered on all of the targets agreed with our original funder over the first five years of the Green Growth Platform.
“Since launch in 2014 we have seen over 1,000 green-focused companies join our network, with more than a quarter of these taking up our intensive innovation, business support or skills services.”
A Brighton graduate has won a gold medal for his construction management and leadership.
Matt Crookes triumphed in the secondary education category at the Construction Manager of the Year awards, run by the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB), considered the world’s largest professional body.
Matt, who graduated from the University of Brighton in 2002 with a BSc(Hons) in Project Management for Construction, said his time in the city was invaluable.
“Brighton is vibrant and creative town and a great place to learn. I very much enjoyed my time there. With my degree I was able to secure a position with a leading construction firm and have remained there ever since, progressing to the role of Project Manager.
“The course was the perfect introduction to the industry and without doubt set me on the right path for a rewarding career.”

Big Bang @ Brighton will take place at the University of Brighton and organisers are promising “an exciting, colourful and noisy event” aimed at encouraging more students to pursue further studies and potential careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).
Organised by STEM Sussex, the University of Brighton’s STEM outreach department, the event is funded by the Sussex Learning Network’s National Collaborative Outreach Programme (NCOP), a four-year programme aimed at encouraging more young people, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds, into higher education.
Big Bang @ Brighton will feature a range of hands-on activities, workshops and shows provided by many local companies, universities and colleges and other organisations, highlighting the STEM-related opportunities available to young people in the area. Read More
Architectural Technology BSc(Hons) graduates have scooped a technical design award for renovation and extension of a Grade 2 listed building.
The team, from Cityzen, the architecture and engineering practice in Portslade, beat competition from across the region to win the Best Extension or Alteration category in this year’s Local Authority Building Control South East Awards.
All winners progress to the Grand Finals to be held in London later this year.
A commitment to promote the careers of women has won the University of Brighton’s School of Environment and Technology (SET) a national award.
SET has received a Bronze Award from the Equality Challenge Unit’s Athena SWAN Charter which was established in 2005 to encourage efforts to advance women’s careers in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment in higher education and research.
A Silver Award was achieved by the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS), run jointly by the universities of Brighton and Sussex. The awards are valid for four years during which both schools will implement a robust action plan to progress gender equality in their schools. The schools join the University of Brighton’s School of Pharmacy and Biomolecular Science in holding a school level Athena SWAN award.
Professor Tara Dean, Pro-Vice-Chancellor for Research and Enterprise, is Chair of the Athena SWAN Steering Group and is University of Brighton’s Gender Equality Champion. She said: “We are very proud that both SET and BSMS have been formally recognised for their commitment to promoting gender equality by attaining the prestigious Athena SWAN Bronze and Silver awards respectively.
“The awards are a tribute to the hard work of the many staff in putting strategies in place to support gender equality, and the genuine institutional commitment to this endeavour.” Read More
