Menus

Main navigation

To provide consistent navigation throughout the site, the main navigation is presented on all pages.

As shown below it is fixed on all templates and is shown when you create a new page. You cannot remove the main navigation.

Megamenu

This refers to the drop down menus available when one of the main menu options is selected. The megamenus are editable by the web team.

Section navigation

There is a limit to how many can be fitted onto one line – they must not overflow onto a second line. Although it is possible to fit a maximum of 7 or 8 section titles onto a single (depending on title length), this is a lot to actually read and having fewer is recommended if possible.

Manage the menu

The order of the section navigation can be adjusted by using the Manage the Menu feature. Click on any folder and Menu the menu will be listed in the drop down menu.

How to Manage the Menu of a folder

You then select what you want to appear by using the tick boxes. On the far left you can drag folders up and down to affect the order in which the appear on the website.

The options for managing the menu

The home / index page should be at the top, then the lower level folders / pages in the same order as the landing page, with any hidden folders / pages listed at the bottom.

If you have created a new page in a live folder you will need to manage the menu for that page – unticking all the options so that it does not appear in the drop-down options of the menu. Don’t forget to retick all those boxes when you make it live, or it will still not appear in the drop down menu.

Breadcrumb

This refers to the navigation trail that appears as you follow links deeper into the website’s folder structure.

Breadcrumb navigation

This should also remain on a single line and titles can be changed or shortened (using the pages’ Menu Name field in the Properties tab) if required.

Contents of the Properties tab

Five levels deep is the maximum. You will need to place pages in folders for the breadcrumb to be generated.

To make an item appear in the breadcrumb, you should create a folder with a home page in it called index. In the example below, Entry requirements appears in the breadcrumb because within the Undergraduate folder there is a folder called Entry requirements, and within that there is a home page called index – check the URL at the bottom of the image if you don’t believe me.
