Performance Project

I decided to choose the costume design team, and we discussed what costumes we would have to create vs bring in from home.

I was given the task of creating the pirates props and costumes.

For the swords, I used cardboard to create the initial shape and layered the cardboard for structure. I think painted using acrylic paint. I used darker shades of paint with a dry brush for the rustic and dirty effect and used a metallic paint for the shine on the ‘metal’ and ‘wood’.

for the pirate hats, I used card and created two of the same hat shape and glued those together. I painted the card black and added a skull and crossbones illustration to the front/

I also made a pirate beard out of paper I painted black. I then braided some string, painted that black and glued it to the beard.  I created a few golden ‘beads’ out of rolled up cardboard for the braids.

Here is an image of one of the actors wearing the pirate props I made.

Performance Project

Initially for this project we were given a text with a the narrative, ‘Light Is Like Water.’ by Garcia Marquez.

The class then split up into small groups in which we could choose which consisted of;

Broadcast/Streaming
Costume Designers
Set Designers
Documentation
Visual effects – Sound
Writers

The writers created their own spin on the narrative to create an original story and then they created a story board and script.

After finishing the first scene of my stop motion and realising it was not long enough, I decided to create an intro and a second scene.
for the intro, I drew a house in a sketchbook. I then drew and cut out wave and water shapes. I stuck the water onto lolly sticks so I could move them without my hands being in the scene.

I used my ipad as the camera, and I used a lamp as a light.
Here is an image of the recording process.

I used a timer of 3 seconds, so I could use both my hands to move the waves in and out.

I then took photographs of the last scene, which was the same box but with a bed instead of the kitchen set. I put the video together on Pro create, and added writing from the text in the intro as well as drawing rain. I kept the rain in the window the whole way through until the last scene where you could see the stars moving.

I also drew the ghosts face in pro create.

I then put my video into Adobe Premier Pro to add sounds such as rain and a sad piano song.

Narratives in motion

For the kitchen scene, I used  large box. I cut out a window shape and added floral paper to the ‘walls’ to represent wallpaper. I then painted this with brown watered down paint to look like the paper was aging and damaged.
For the kitchen surface I used lolly pop sticks and match sticks and superglue, then painted these with dark browns and purple colours.  I also managed to find some wooden slabs in hobbycraft that I used for the floor.

for the detailing such as the cigarette butts, plate and bottle, I baked polymer clay and painted it with acrylic paint.

For the first idea of the ghost, I used polymer clay and created a wire and tinfoil ‘skeleton’ to hold the shape.

This didn’t work for multiple reasons. The clay was naturally a pink colour and had a very smooth texture therefore was difficult to paint. The paint did not stick well to the smooth surface, and it required multiple layers of white to get a full coverage and even so, there were very visible paint brush marks over the entire ghost.

Secondly, the only parts of the ghost that moved were the wire arms and legs, and I really wanted the ghost to look fluid and move around freely. The ghost was also very heavy due to the amount of clay, so there was no way to make it naturally float and look weightless.

For the water I used blue tissue paper, scrunched up. In every scene I moved this slightly so it appeared to be more fluid like water.
To create a ghost that was more flexible and manipulative,  I also used tissue paper, I started with a small bit and in every scene I added more shape. For the ghost to appear floating I added a small wire underneath and attached it to the ground with blue tac so it was able to move around. The wire was very flexible so could easily move the ghost to different areas.

I did this effect for the speech bubble also but with paper instead of tissue paper.

Narratives In Motion

For this project, we had to create a stop motion video  using one of the texts provided that lasted approximately 1min and 30 seconds.

During class, we got into small groups to experiment with stop motion and creating a short story based on a figure we had brought in. Our team had a small dinosaur figurine and revolved the narrative around that. We created a story where the dinosaur is running from lava from a volcano.

We created the shapes of the props from cardboard, a sky with clouds on white cardboard. We used natural objects such as leaves for the trees and rocks for the ground that we found outdoors.

The volcano was made from three pieces of cardboard cut into triangle shapes and glued together. The lava was created using ripped up orange card and the smoke was cotton wool balls.
We used a small tripod and an iPhone to create the stop motion using a stop motion app.

This task was helpful to understanding stop motion and what can be used as props, as well as how slow/quick you need to move items to make them look fluid or jumpy.

For my own stop motion video, I had to create a story board, characters and set design.
I decided to revert back to my first text, ‘A natural Disaster’ as this could be open to a lot of interpretation.

I created a mind map of ideas for my stop motion ranging from scene ideas, colours and characters. Adding quotes to help link the ideas.

After this I knew I wanted to work with the characters being ghosts as this was more unique and interesting.

I made  story board for the first scene in the kitchen (Blurry quality unfortunately)

In the scene there is a flooded kitchen with a window showing rain. Then a ghost appears from the flooded ground, getting larger. It then looks at a small image of some humans and says ‘I miss you’ and then disappears back in the ground.

Notes:
1) what will make the water?
2) What will the ghost be made from ?
2.1) how will the ghost float and become bigger?
3) How will I create a text box?

Artivive

After creating my animations, I put them on the website ‘Artivive’ where you can upload your videos with a ‘trigger image’ and then are able to scan the image to create a VR piece of art.

Here is the layout of artivive and then all my animations inside the app,

For my last animation, I used digital illustration on procreate as that was my favourite technique.
I decided to use the fat workie as the character, walking through the industrial area with his wheelbarrow.
I used a darker colour pallet  to create a gloomy and foggy effect with a pop of yellow for his worker outfit to make him stand out.

I only created 2 illustrations for this animated GIF and then duplicated these illustrations.

The illustratinos are just of his leg changing and the smoke on his cigarette moving as well as the wheel on his wheelbarrow to create the effect of walking.

After speaking to a tutor, I was asked what my favourite type of medium for illustrating is and I responded ‘ink wash’ and I was told to go with that  for my third Animation, I illustrated using ink and water to create a office building scene and then a character at her desk.
I then put these illustrations into pro create and added some text, that was where the animation came in. I also added tiny details of colour to windows and screens to represent the lights from laptops/phones.

Here are the original sketches I created using an ink wash.
