Employers top tips from the Careers Fair – Part 2

Hello, it’s me again with all things applications! If you didn’t make it to our Careers Fair on 8th November, don’t worry, as Employment Advisor at our Moulsecoomb campus I did some homework for you by chatting to our exhibiting employers and am sharing the top tips I’ve gathered from the event this week in a series of blogs. Today is part 2.

Today’s top tip is  Show some personalitycareers

A lot of the companies I spoke to wanted to know about the person behind the CV; they are looking for applicants who have passions outside of work and can show personality on their application. The Interests section of your CV is the best place to show this. When you put interests in, choose one or two key areas that you can show passion about. Provide detail and show what inspires you.

If you play sport regularly, tell the reader about what you have achieved, are you part of a team? say which one, mention if you’ve won a championship or award, say if you hold a role of responsibility, and what you’ve learnt about skills such as team work, resilience etc..

If you don’t actively feel like you have interests in a practical way like this, think about your passions e.g. reading, art, cooking, travelling, singing. If you enjoy travelling why not tell the reader what it is that you love about travelling, say where you’ve been, which places have inspired you and why. Show that you have more to offer than your academic studies. Originality and authenticity are very important in your application.

Hope this helps and if you want to know any more, book in for a one to one chat with your Career Development Advisor on your campus or for more application help with me at Moulsecoomb campus.  All our details can be found online at https://www.brighton.ac.uk/careers/contact-us/index.aspx
