Top Tips to Securing a Placement

DECIDE WHERE YOU WANT TO APPLY TO FIRST

Look at available placements in your subject area by clicking here. With nearly 200 companies already advertising you have lots of choice! Deciding what you want to apply for will help you identify what to write in your CV, covering letter or online application so you can get started.

CONSIDER THE ROLE

We all know the names of the big shiny organisations but smaller organisations can offer fantastic placement experiences too so be open-minded!

THINK ABOUT THE LOCATION

So you’ve found that dream placement but it’s located up North and you don’t want to travel past Watford Gap….our advice is GO FOR IT, IT’S ONLY A YEAR! If you have no intention of living there though, don’t waste yours or the company’s time.

NOT JUST THE SALARY

Make sure you’re applying for the right reasons and you really want the experience. Salary is important but placement salaries usually start at around £14,500 so you have everything to gain.

GET YOUR CV/APPLICATIONS CHECKED BEFORE YOU SUBMIT!

Before you hit ‘send’…WAIT! HAVE YOU HAD IT CHECKED? Email it in a Word document to sciengplacements@brighton.ac.uk or email to book an appointment.

GET YOURSELF OUT THERE

Attend events! We have several coming up:

CAREERS FAIR: WEDNESDAY 4TH NOVEMBER, 11.00-15.00 AT THE AMEX STADIUM

PLACEMENTS FAIR: THURSDAY 19TH NOVEMBER, 12.00-15.00 IN COCKCROFT HALL

BUILT ENVIRONMENT AND CIVIL ENGINEERING CAREERS FAIR: FRIDAY 4TH DECEMBER, 13.00-15.00 IN COCKCROFT HALL
These are the perfect opportunity to meet people (including current placement students), talk to companies and ask lots of questions. Have your CV checked and ready before you go as some employers accept these on the day.

Once you make your first application, your confidence will grow… so what’s stopping you?

We already have one student who has secured a placement – could you be our next?
