Populism is at the centre of contemporary political, critical and democratic debate. This conference invites reflection on the relationship between Democracy and Populism. Is the demosdistinct from the populus? Is populism a necessary element of democratic politics? Is it a response to the failure of ‘liberal democratic’ capitalism or merely its perverse shadow? Do populist forms of politics open a space for democratic renewal? Is populism of necessity exclusionary and racist? Is the demos equivalent to the people? Has neoliberalism spawned a right-wing and racist populist politics?

The conference calls for papers that see the potential for democratic renewal despite the emergence of reactionary populism across the globe.

Topics for consideration include (but are by no means limited to) the following:

  • The Politics of Affect
  • Gender politics: Populist politics?
  • Digital technologies: articulating a new populus?
  • Histories of Populist Politics
  • Transnational Populism: Ideas, Policies and Practices.
  • The Biopolitics of populism: Borders, Peoples and Nations
  • Brexit, Trump and Anglo-American Populisms
  • Ideology, Truth and Populism

Fees: £150 (Full Rate) / £100 (Reduced/Unwaged)

A number of bursaries are available to support scholars from outside the Global North who would otherwise be unable to attend
