Partner visit – April 5th 2014

Our French colleagues and students visited the Faculty of Art in April. This visit was a great opportunity to discuss the project success and consider the next steps in our collaboration. We enjoyed tours of the Faculty and then a visit to St Bartholomews to discuss plans for the June show and exhibition. We then all attended the University of Brighton 2nd year student’s fashion show at Coalition (FAT). The photography students from Amiens documented the day and the evening event as well as doing photo shoot of the WOAD garments to be displayed at both Gala events in June. The Université of Picardie’s students also documented the event on film and in cartoon style animations.

 

Whirlpool Effect

Here is my main idea, on the picture : a rose in paper, in origami.
I just wanted to find this “whirlpool” effect in my work, but I also think that the folding is interesting, it goes from a same point, from a samtumblr_mxm1q8D4qw1rtr4bno1_1280e base.
In sculpture the idea of the finish is important, here the principle is to “roll” the edges of the flower in order that the petals look more real. I just tried to figure it out in my productions.
The clay isn’t a thing that I master easily and perfectly.
After some attempts (that I didn’t keep), I choose to go continue on this idea of a same point which turns. This is what I did during the first session, I didn’t like the result.
Then, I made a superposition of round bases of clay (for petals) that I manipulated properly.
During the drying, the clay caused some crackles: I choose not to fix that and play with that effect, to arrive at something I wanted.

The photo in the middle shows you what I finally obtained, which started to look like a rose.
With pieces of fabrics and plaster, we have to do differents things.
I dived a piece of fabric in the plaster, and I put it on a square framework.

Mon idée principale était celle de la rose en papier, en origami. J’ai voulu retrouver cet effet tourbillonnant dans mon travail plastique, je trouve que le plié est intéressant, le fait que tout part d’un même point, d’une même base.
En sculpture l’idée de finition est importante, j’ai roulé les bords de ma rose pour qu’elle paraisse plus réelle.
L’argile n’est pas un medium que je maîtrise parfaitement, c’est pourquoi il m’a fallu effectuer plusieurs essais avant d’être convaincue.
Pendant le séchage de la terre, celle-ci s’est craquelée, j’ai choisi de jouer avec cet effet au lieu de le réparer.
Avec des morceaux de tissu et du plâtre, nous avons eu l’occasion de faire plusieurs choses. En trempant mon morceau de tissu dans du plâtre et en le posant sur une armature carrée de grillage, voici ce que j’ai obtenu.

Université of Picardie select UofB Digital Prints to create their sculptures

My colleagues, Ghislaine Vappereau and Elisabeth Piot, who are both sculptors and teachers at the University of Picardy, have chosen two designs out of a selection of images proposed to us by the Brighton College of Arts. They are : Islamic Mosque Window, by Ms Davidson, and 3D Hexagon, by Ms Lovell.

The designs are now to be printed onto fabrics, shipped to us and turned into sculptural artefacts by our students. Some of the preparatory clay models for these sculptures can be seen in this blog.

The works which were submitted to us were all very good, and the choice was difficult. My colleagues selected the designs according to two criteria : first, for the outstanding beauty of the images, then for the possibility of adapting the designs into three dimensional objects.

The Islamic Mosque Window design opens many artistic possibilities, the perspective effects of a window looking on to oriental culture. And it also bridges over French and British civilisations.Islamic_Blog

 

 

 

The 3D Hexagon design was the perfect cross-border collaboration design, as the hexagon is one of the well-known symbols of France, and its graphic 3D style is particularly adapted to foldings and trompe-l’oeil effects.

Liberty Wings – Les ailes de la liberté

Ailes 1I hoped now to have a more conceptual work … I wanted a work that makes us think … So . What is the real symbol of liberty? It’s the navigator’s life . Seventy percent of earth is covered by the seas , oceans . It’s the most spacious area with all the liberty dimensions you can imagine , but not like our materialist world …

So , my work is an evocation of sails, without the hull structure . I had to sew my cloths on a wire structure .

Do you observe the particular form of these sails ? I made them round because I hoped to make an evocation of the wind pushing the boat .

What is the boat symbolism ? It’s You , me , the world … Could we make from this work a similar version with your fabrics ?

With “Liberty wings” the artistic goal is “To show that all human can determinate their own destiny, but it’s not for the economic world to tell us : consume , work and shut-up !” -Juls-

J’espérai maintenant une œuvre plus conceptuelle, plus aérienne … une œuvre qui fasse réfléchir . Bien, mais qu’est ce qui peut représenter le symbole de liberté ? C’est la vie du Navigateur. Soixante dix pourcents de la terre est couverte par les eaux. C’est l’espace le plus vaste avec toutes les dimensions de liberté que l’on peut imaginer, pas comme notre monde matérialiste …

Donc, mon travail est une évocation de bateau sans la coque . J’ai donc cousu mon tissu sur une structure en grillage. Avez-vous observé la forme des ces voiles ? Elles sont arrondies par mon souhait d’évoquer le rôle du vent qui pousse le bateau.

Le bateau symbolise : Vous , Moi , Le Monde …

Pourrions-nous réaliser partant de cette œuvre une déclinaison avec vos tissus ?

Avec « Les ailes de la liberté », le but artistique est de «  Montrer que l’Humain seul peut déterminer sa destinée , et ce n’est pas au monde économique de nous dire : Consomme , Travaille et ferme-là !»  .

Sculptures et experimentations

At the beginning, I was looking for some forms which the paper, the fabric and the clay could have. The modelling can be so different and it is interesting, to work like that. I don’t know what can I do, I begin with no idea, and the work takes place in my hands, alone. What I prefer to work is the fabric because it was new for me and the result was really interesting. I did many experiments but I kept 6 works. I think personally that my last work (“theater”) encloses my all works in this theme. I look forward to working with the English students’ fabrics because it’s interesting to mix our work which started a few months ago.

leseine2Ce travail a débuté sur des recherches sur les formes que peuvent prendre un papier, un tissu, de la terre. Les modelages peuvent être très différents et c’est ce qui est intéressant. On peut froisser un papier, essayer de le reproduire en terre, en tissu, en plâtre, et il ne sera jamais pareil. La matière fait du modelage une forme différente à chaque fois. Ce que j’ai préféré travailler, c’est le tissu, particulièrement plongé dans le plâtre, cela rend un travail très intéressant. Je pense que mon dernier travail réalisé durant le premier semestre de cette année, appelé « le théâtre » est celui qui clôt parfaitement mes recherches de travail et mes idées. J’ai hâte de travailler avec les tissus des étudiants anglais pour pouvoir mixer notre travail que l’on a commencé depuis ces quelques mois.

Bow Tie – Un noeud papillon

Noeud 2Je devais imaginer un ouvrage partant d’une surface carrée de tissu. Quand je l’ai vue, j’ai pensé réaliser un nœud papillon comme dans les temps anciens, ce qui était un noble « exercice de style ».

J’ai donc plié cette surface comme je le souhaitais, à « l’ancienne » … mon nœud papillon était né !!! Je n’avais plus qu’à le figer définitivement par un bain de plâtre.

Il serait intéressant de répéter cet exercice avec un morceau de tissu plus grand en le finissant par une peinture brillante. L’on pourrait substituer le plâtre par de la colle papier-peint ou autre substitut transparent (l’important est de voir le motif du tissu, sa forme et de figer le travail).

On pourrait obtenir une œuvre intéressante avec les réalisations de tissu de Brighton et faire une déclinaison de nœuds papillons géants !!!!

Le but artistique ? «  Montrer que l’ancien et le moderne peuvent ensemble former une belle réalisation esthétique, pas comme le résultat de notre monde actuel qui essaie de nous diviser ». C’est ma conception philosophique : 1 + 1 = « 1 », mais 1 – 1 = « 0 ».

Noeud - Bow Tie « The Bow-Tie »

I had to imagine a work, starting with a square surface of fabric. When I’ve seen this surface, I was inspired to make a Bow-Tie, like in the old times, which was a noble and stylistic exercise .  So I ‘ve folded my surface like I hoped , with the old method … my Bow-Tie was born !!!  After that, I had to make a plaster bath and definitively paralyse my Bow-Tie form.

It could be interesting to repeat that with a larger or longer cloth surface, but finishing it with a special glossy transparent painting. We could substitute the plaster with wallpaper glue or another transparent material (the important is to see the “Cloth”, the “Form” and to paralyse this work).

We could obtain an interesting work or declension with the Brighton cloths by making giant Bow-Ties !!!!

Artistic goal ?  “To show that an old method with new materials can give a great aesthetic result … not like the result of our modern world which consists in separating people !!!!” It is my artistic philosophy : 1 + 1 = “1” …  but and  1 – 1 = “0”
